Carlos Alcaraz battled through illness to secure a win against Andrey Rublev at the ATP Tour Finals in Turin. Despite facing a chest issue that forced him to shorten his practice on Tuesday, the 21-year-old Spaniard managed to win the match 6-3, 7-6 (10-8).
Wearing a pink nasal strip to assist his breathing, Alcaraz dominated the first set by claiming four straight games, finishing it in just 37 minutes with two service breaks. He went on to win the second set in a thrilling tie-break, totaling 33 winners in the match, significantly more than Rublev's 14.
After his victory, Alcaraz wrote 'Valencia' on the TV monitor as a gesture of support for those affected by recent floods in his home country. The French Open and Wimbledon champion had previously struggled in his first match in Turin, losing to Norwegian Casper Ruud.
During Wednesday's match, Alcaraz showed improved movement, utilizing a chest rub during breaks. He managed to break Rublev from a 40-15 disadvantage for a 4-3 lead after Rublev mishit a straightforward forehand. The eighth seed, Rublev, responded by forcing a tie-break in the second set after holding serve.
Alcaraz established an early lead in the tie-break but faced pressure as he had to save two set points before ultimately securing the win. Next, Alcaraz is set to face Alexander Zverev on Friday in his final round-robin match. Zverev will also be competing against Ruud on Wednesday, with a win for him potentially guaranteeing a position in the semifinals.
